The 2025 Soil Symposium of Ethiopia has been held with the theme “Healthy Soil for Our Prosperity,” collaborating with Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture and German Biomass Research Centre.
Soil scientists drawn from research institutes and universities, partners, as well as federal and regional stakeholders, are participating to share knowledge and experiences.
Opening the symposium, the State Minister of Agriculture, Professor Eyasu Eliyas (PhD), indicated that Ethiopia faces challenges in maintaining and restoring soil health due to soil acidity and salinity.
Professor Eyasu pointed out that the ETH-Soil Project is an innovative approach to tackle such challenges related to soil health.
So it essential to revolutionize soil management practices in Ethiopia through the energetic and material use of agricultural residues and bio-fertilizers, he mentioned.
Biochar technology, also, has great potential to enhance soil fertility by converting crop residues, waste, and wood resources into carbon-rich material through pyrolysis, Professor Eyasu Noted.
The ETH-Soil Project is generating evidence-based solutions to benefit smallholder farmers by enhancing food security and strengthening climate resilience, he mentioned.
Soil Resource Development Lead Executive of the MoA, Lire Abiyo, stated that the nation is blessed with abundant soil resources; because of this natural gift, Ethiopia has earned the title of “Museum of Soils.”
ETH-Soil Symposium marks a significant milestone in improving soil fertility, natural resources, and agricultural productivity, Professor Eyasu stated.
“Soil is more than the foundation of our crops; it is the lifeline of our ecosystems, a reservoir of biodiversity, and a key player in climate resilience,” the executive remarked.
“We face challenges such as soil degradation, climate change, and unsustainable farming practices,” the executive mentioned.
“Protecting soil resources is essential to achieve desired outcomes; as a result, greater attention is being given to the health and fertility of the soil more than ever before,” Lire said.
“This soil symposium provides an opportunity to exchange knowledge and best practices and explore innovative solutions to protect and restore our soil resources,” Lire concluded.
