The Livestock Water Monitoring and Risk Management System (LWMRMS) Project, implemented by the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT in collaboration with various Ethiopian institutions and supported by the Gates Foundation, addressed the challenges in sustainable pastoral development, climate change-induced risks, and resource-based conflicts.

The project developed the ET-Monitoring platform, a web-based digital tool providing real-time water and pasture data in multiple languages. This platform helps pastoralists and stakeholders to have information and make decisions on livestock movement, reducing competition over resources and minimizing conflict risks.

User-centered water and pasture monitoring and early warning system training of trainers has been held in International Livestock Research Institute with MoA and other stockholders experts.

The objectives of the training is to enhance the knowledge and skills of the federal level experts and researchers from various institutions in effectively utilizing and implementing the output of the user centered water and pasture monitoring, forecasting, and early warning system for risk management (ET Monitoring) and informed decision making.

On the occasion Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research Director General Professor Nigussie Dechassa said that water and pasture are critical resources for livelihoods, particularly in pastoral and agro-pastoral communities.

Professor Nigussie added that it is volubility of pastures that determine the productivity and human welfare in particularly pastoral and agro-pastoral communities.
