Ethiopia’s agricultural policy and strategy aims to increase farmers’ and pastoralists’ incomes, ensure food and nutrition security, boost exports, promote value addition , create jobs, and achieve food sovereignty. Enhancing market-oriented productivity is also a top priority.
Bounty of the Basket Initiative-‘Yelemat Trufat’its Amharic name- an Ethiopian government five-year program aimed at boosting agricultural productivity, ensuring food security, and improving farmers’ and pastoralists’ livelihood. It is pivotal in transforming the sector by strengthening food and nutrition security, expanding export potential, and creating employment.
Key interventions include breed improvement, distribution of poultry and fish fingerlings, provision of animal feed and modern beehives, and enhanced animal health services.
Signfiicant improvement has been recorded in these areas. Animal breeding increased from 500,000 in 2021 to 3.8 million in 2025, with a target of 4.9 million in 2026. Distribution of Day-old chick rose from 26 million to 136 million, with 175 million planned for 2026. Modern beehives grew from 1.2 million to 3.4 million, while fish fingerling production rose from 1.9 million to 14.44 million over the sample period.
These interventions drove significant productivity gains: milk production rose from 7.1 billion liters in 2021/22 to 13.1 billion liters in 2024/25, targeting 15.06 billion liters in 2025/26; Egg production increased from 3.2 billion to 9.3 billion, aiming for 11.23 billion. Poultry meat production rose from 90 thousand tons to 190 thousand tons, targeting 224.7 thousand tons in 2025/26; Honey production grew from 146.7 thousand tons to 326 thousand tons, aiming for 359.6 thousand tons. Fish production increased from 72.4 thousand tons to 243.8 thousand tons, with a target of 276.7 thousand tons in 2025/26.
Under the initiative, 15,976 dairy, 21,400 poultry, 4,000 honey, and 2,433 fish development villages have been established, strengthening breed improvement, feed systems, animal health services, and market linkages.
