Apiculture Management Information System modernizes the beekeeping sector

To modernize the beekeeping sector in Ethiopia,  National Apiculture Management

Information Management System (APMIS) has been developed.

Consultations have been conducted with stakeholders to implement this Apiculture Management information system (APMIS) effectively.

When launching APMIS, the State Minister of Agriculture, Fikru Regassa (PhD), emphasized that even though Ethiopia has favorable conditions for beekeeping and animal husbandry, the sector has not been developed as much as possible.

As Dr. Fekru explained, the Bounty of the Basket (Yelemat Tirufat) has optimized through creating a favorable environment for enhancing honey production and productivity.

Last year, the nation achieved 327 thousand tons honey production  and efforts underway to produce 375 thousand tons in the current budget year.

The management of the information system emphasizes the need to secure traceability and quality standards in the global marketplace to benefit from the beekeeping sector.

Dr. Fikru appreciated The International Center of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE-Ethiopia) has been supporting the enhancement of the national beekeeping information management system covering 135 woredas.

Dr. Tadelle, the Country Director for ICIPE-Ethiopia, stated the importance of a comprehensive information system to know market conditions for effective pest management and secure food availability.

Dr. Tadele also highlighted the need for a rapid and organized data transfer system to support the beekeeping sector effectively.

Dr. Tadele stressed that the National APMIS serves as a centralized platform for managing beekeeping data, including sourcing honey, producing hive products, and controlling honey quality.

As to Dr. Tadele, The system aims to support researchers, policymakers, and other stakeholders by providing reliable data management and services.

Aziz Ayalew Apiculture and Sericulture Development Desk Head, in Ministry of Agriculture remarks APMIS serves as a  platform for collecting, managing, and processing beekeeping data.

The platform has been designed to evaluate performance and enhance subsequent operations effectively, Aziz said.

Stakeholders involved in the consultation have shared their insights on the National Apiculture Information Management System.
