Addis Ababa, September 18, 2026 (Ministry of Agriculture) โ€“ The Ministry of Agriculture, in collaboration with development partners and stakeholders, has officially launched the implementation of the Ethio-Seed Hub, a national seed information system designed to strengthen Ethiopiaโ€™s seed sector and support the realization of the countryโ€™s Digital Ethiopia 2030 agenda.

At the launch event, Abera Lemma, Representative of the state minister for the Investment and Agricultural Inputs Sector, said the Ethio-Seed Hub was developed to bridge information gaps in the seed sector by providing accurate and timely data that enhances farmersโ€™ access to quality seeds.
He emphasized that seed is at the heart of agricultural production and that a strong seed system is essential for increasing productivity and ensuring food security in Ethiopia.

โ€œFarmers need timely and reliable information on the types of seed available, where and when they can access them, the quantities in stock, and the amount required for their production needs,โ€ he said. โ€œThe Ethio-Seed Hub will play a critical role in providing this information and improving decision-making across the seed value chain.โ€

Abera called on regional governments, research institutions, universities, seed producers, private sector actors, and development partners to work collaboratively to ensure the successful implementation of the platform and achieve its intended objectives.

He noted that the success of the Ethio-Seed Hub will depend on the active participation and commitment of all stakeholders involved in Ethiopiaโ€™s seed sector.

Speaking at the event, Namukolo Covic, Representative of the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in Ethiopia, said the new platform will enhance coordination, improve efficiency, and facilitate informed decision-making across the countryโ€™s seed system.

According to Namukolo Covic, the inclusion of forage seed information in the Ethio-Seed Hub recognizes the need for crop and livestock systems to advance together as part of a broader food systems transformation agenda. She added that the platform also supports the objectives of Ethiopiaโ€™s Green Legacy Initiative and โ€œYelemat Tirufat โ€œ(Bounty of the Basket) Initiative by strengthening access to critical agricultural information.

The launch event also marked the unveiling of the official Ethio-Seed Hub website and the publication of a new book titled โ€œMapping and Digitalization of the Ethiopian Seed System.โ€ The publication is expected to serve as an important reference resource for policymakers, researchers, seed sector actors, and development partners working to strengthen Ethiopiaโ€™s seed system.
