Addis Ababa, September 2, 2026 (Ministry of Agriculture) โ Ethiopia recorded significant growth in agricultural production and export performance during the 2025/26 fiscal year.
The achievements were highlighted during a program held to evaluate the agricultural sector’s 2018 E.C. performance, review the 2019 E.C. fiscal year plan, and recognize outstanding employees of the Ministry of Agriculture.
Speaking at the event, State Minister, at the Ministry of Agriculture Ethiopia Sofia Kassa (PhD) said that more than 33.5 million hectares of land were cultivated with various crops during the fiscal year, resulting in the production of over 1.85 billion quintals of agricultural output.
To support crop production, the government distributed more than 20 million quintals of fertilizer to farmers nationwide, helping to boost productivity and strengthen agricultural resilience.
Dr. Sofia noted that encouraging progress was also recorded in the livestock sector under the Bounty of the Basket Initiative, which aims to enhance food and nutrition security. During the fiscal year, the country produced more than 15.8 billion liters of milk and 11.7 billion eggs, significantly increasing the supply of nutritious food products.
The state minister also highlighted notable achievements in natural resource management, including the implementation of the Green Legacy Initiative and extensive soil and water conservation programs carried out across the country.
In the area of agricultural trade, Ethiopia generated more than USD 4.55 billion in foreign exchange earnings from agricultural exports during the fiscal year. Coffee remained the country’s leading export commodity, generating USD 3.1 billion and accounting for the largest share of export revenues.
The ministry further reported that comprehensive planning and coordinated efforts enabled the country to secure sufficient fertilizer supplies despite global supply chain challenges and geopolitical disruptions affecting international markets.
During the event, participants reviewed presentations on the agricultural sector’s 2018 E.C. performance report, the 2019 E.C. fiscal year development plan, the National Avocado Development Program, the Boer Goat Breed Improvement Initiative, and the Agribusiness Companies Proclamation.
The program brought together senior officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, regional agriculture bureaus, affiliated institutions, and other key stakeholders.
